Cosco Busan Oil Spill
- LOCATION: San Francisco Bay and San Francisco, Marin, Contra Costa, Alameda, and San Mateo Counties.
- DATE: November 7, 2007
- INCIDENT SUMMARY: The container ship Cosco Busan struck a support tower in the Bay Bridge, puncturing the vessel and spilling 53,569 gallons of Intermediate Fuel Oil.
- RESPONSIBLE PARTY: Regal Stone, Ltd.
- NATURAL RESOURCE TRUSTEES: California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, California State Lands Commission, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, National Parks Service, Bureau of Land Management and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
- RESOURCES IMPACTED: Birds, marine mammals, fish, habitat, and human uses.
- SETTLEMENT DETAILS: The trustees settled the NRDA portion of the case for $32.3 million. This includes $5 million for bird restoration, $4 million for habitat restoration, $2.5 million for fish and eelgrass restoration, $18.8 million for recreational improvements, and $2 million for administration and oversight.
- STATUS OF RESTORATION: Final Damage Assessment and Restoration Plan completed; restoration projects now in progress; see the Plan and News Updates below for details.
