The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has extended the closure of the Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve in Santa Cruz County until May 1, 2009.
DFG scientists are continuing to assess the impacts of the Martin Fire on listed plant species and their habitat. Recent surveys have shown some regeneration. Continuation of the closure until after winter rains and spring growth will limit potential damage to soils and plant species from foot traffic and will give species a chance to start their recovery.
DFG staff is also continuing to work with Cal Fire to ensure that hazards from the fire no longer exist. Only state and local law enforcement, fire suppression agencies officers, DFG employees in the performance of their official duties or persons possessing written permission from DFG will be allowed access to the reserve. The Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve contains three state and federal listed plant species and is one of only three sites where Santa Cruz Cypress are found.
